My toilet is falling down through the floor of my bathroom so I have to fix it myself. This is very difficult for me to do because of my disability but there is no agency or NGO to help with this sort of thing.

On Facebook there are some interesting discussions going on. Check out a page called ”Extra benefits for Persons with Disabilities (PWD) in British Columbia.”

A friend of mine, who is also on PWD, is going into our MLAs office and researching the very low amount that disabled people get for shelter. He went into the office to ask why disabled people get only $375/month to pay their rent and utilities but found that nobody in the office or the MLA knew anything about it. Since we PWDs are too poor to own computers, he is using the computers in the office to find information like: how much do PWDs in other provinces get; by what percent has the cost of rent and utilities gone up since the last time our shelter allowance went up; what is the average rent and utilities cost in various parts of the province. I will be posting this information here as I receive it. It would be helpful if other people in the province would contact their MLAs, local papers, friends and family and inform them of this biggest injustice facing PWDs in B. C.

Hi. Here’s a link to the Family Support Institute: http://www.familysupportbc.com/contact_us. We have found that the barriers of, firstly, having a potential residence (home), accessibility, location, availability of homeshare family, caregiver, roommates, etc. are extremely challenging. A local agency is doing the groundwork regarding potential caregivers and location (residence), and we are working together to create [...]

Yes, it would be a good idea to make this tax credit refundable. I admit that I have a limited understanding of the tax system in Canada, but I know that there are tax credit which ARE refundable, so this one should be also.

I had a similar question and contacted the Family Support Institute to request that they pose a question to their large network of parents with children/adults with disabilities. There are some parents who have experience setting up Homeshare and have achieved successful life situations for their adult child. I was able to connect with folks [...]

Hi Jack: I have been calling the number you gave me but seem only to be receiving your voice-mail. I do hope you have not found yourself in any ‘crisis mode’. Please feel free to phone the number I have left you – collect if you choose – I will be here the rest of [...]

I’m glad @pooh40 is getting her questions answered. But Jack could you make what you tell her on the phone available to us on FamilyTalks, please? We have a trust set up in our will with the trustees, but I don’t think that we have “set up” the trust because I understand that costs about $1200 [...]
